Summer gets a bad reputation.
Between vacations, cookouts, pool parties, family gatherings, and ice cream runs, it's easy to feel like staying healthy has to take a back seat until Labor Day.
Every year we hear the same thing:
"I'll get back on track in September."
The problem?
September turns into October.
October turns into the holidays.
Before you know it, six months have passed.
Here's the good news:
You don't have to choose between enjoying summer and making progress.
In fact, the healthiest people I know do both.
At Coastal Strength & Fitness in Newport News, we coach adults over 40 every day, and one thing has become very clear:
The people who stay healthiest aren't the ones with perfect summers.
They're the ones who know how to stay consistent during imperfect ones.
One of the biggest mistakes people make is believing there are only two options.
Option 1:
Eat grilled chicken, broccoli, and never touch dessert.
Option 2:
Vacation mode for three months.
Real life exists somewhere in the middle.
Enjoy the burger.
Have the homemade peach cobbler.
Take the family out for ice cream.
Then get right back to your normal habits at the next meal.
One meal never made anyone unhealthy.
Just like one salad never made anyone healthy.
Consistency always wins.
Summer schedules get messy.
Kids are home.
Family visits.
Beach trips.
Weekend travel.
Instead of asking:
"Can I follow my normal routine?"
Ask:
"What's the best I can do this week?"
Maybe your normal week includes four workouts.
Vacation week?
Maybe you get in two.
That's still a win.
Progress isn't built by having perfect weeks.
It's built by refusing to let one busy week become a lost month.
If you know you'll be at a cookout or party, don't stress about every food on the table.
Instead, make one simple decision.
Build your meal around protein first.
Chicken.
Steak.
Turkey burger.
Fish.
Shrimp.
Then add the foods you enjoy.
Protein helps support muscle, keeps you fuller longer, and makes it much easier to avoid feeling stuffed after the meal.
Simple beats perfect.
Summer is one of the easiest times of year to be more active without feeling like you're exercising.
Take an evening walk.
Walk on the beach.
Walk the boardwalk.
Walk after dinner.
Take the dog.
Take the grandkids.
Park farther away.
Those little bits of movement add up more than most people realize.
Virginia summers are no joke.
By the time you feel thirsty, you're already starting to fall behind.
Even mild dehydration can leave you feeling:
More tired
Less energetic
Hungrier than you actually are
Less motivated to exercise
Carry a water bottle.
Drink consistently throughout the day.
And if you're sweating a lot outside, don't forget electrolytes along with water.
Most people over 40 aren't trying to become fitness influencers.
They're trying to:
Have energy.
Keep up with their kids and grandkids.
Improve blood work.
Stay independent.
Feel confident.
Age well.
Missing one workout doesn't change any of that.
Missing three months might.
Keep your focus on the big picture.
One of the biggest mindset shifts we try to teach our members is this:
Healthy people don't put life on hold to stay healthy.
They build habits that fit into real life.
That means enjoying birthdays.
Vacations.
Holidays.
Cookouts.
Ice cream.
And then getting right back to normal.
No guilt.
No punishment workouts.
No "starting over Monday."
Just getting back to your routine.
After coaching adults over 40 for years, we've noticed something interesting.
The members who make the best long-term progress aren't necessarily the ones who have the "cleanest" summers.
They're the ones who never disappear.
Maybe they miss a workout because they're at the beach.
Maybe they enjoy dessert at a family reunion.
Maybe they only make it to the gym twice during vacation week.
But they come back.
They don't let one weekend become one month.
They understand that healthy aging isn't about perfection.
It's about showing up more often than not.
Before you head into your next vacation or cookout, ask yourself:
How can I move my body today?
How can I prioritize protein at this meal?
How can I enjoy this event without feeling like I've failed?
If you can answer those three questions consistently, you'll likely finish the summer healthier than you started.
And that's a much better goal than trying to have a "perfect" summer.
If you're looking for a supportive community that helps adults over 40 build sustainable habits—not extreme ones—we'd love to show you what we're all about at Coastal Strength & Fitness in Newport News. Our goal isn't to help you survive the summer. It's to help you build habits that last through every season.
